Information

In 2014 the Edison School District received a Colorado Department of Education BEST Grant to improve their existing site utilities, including upgraded electrical service and a new water well, as well as work to correct the deteriorating exterior stucco skin of the existing historic 1922 Junior / Senior High School Building.

The school campus consisted of a 2009 Elementary School Building, the historic 1922 Junior/ Senior High School Building, and a 1960’s era gymnasium and locker room addition that had provided the original 1922 building’s first indoor restroom and kitchen facilities. In the intervening years, a shop building was “tacked on” as well. The site also included a number of storage buildings and two unused teacherages, as well as several portable classrooms. This is a true rural school, as there is no surrounding town associated with the campus.

Working with a very involved community based Design Advisory Group, LKA designed a new addition that would address handicap accessibility and building security concerns by linking together under one roof the existing 1922 Junior / Senior High School Building and the 2009 Elementary School Building.

Within this complicated rural site, LKA designed a 36,000 sf addition that gracefully fits between the existing buildings, allowing them to continue functioning during the year long construction period. Student safety and recognition of the necessity to continue providing an environment conducive to learning during the construction period were also of paramount importance. Therefore, the building’s form was heavily influenced by the need for it to be constructed independent of the existing buildings.

This project is targeting LEED Silver Certification. Through a variety of environmentally friendly, energy efficient site and building components, the new design presents an innovative, low maintenance, high performing, safe learning environment crafted to meet the needs of the 21st century student.
